What is on-model photography?

On-model photography is any product image that shows the garment being worn. It's the single strongest conversion lever in apparel e-commerce because it tells buyers what the piece looks like on a body, fit, drape, scale, and styling all at once.

Traditional cost of on-model photography

A one-day on-model shoot in a major market runs $2,000–$8,000 all-in: model rate ($400–$1,500), photographer ($800–$3,000), studio rental ($400–$1,500), styling, hair, makeup, retouching. Small brands often can't justify the spend, so they stay on flat-lays and lose conversion.

AI on-model, what changed

AI tools now generate on-model images from a garment flat-lay at $0.50–$2 per image. The economics inverted: you can now afford on-model photography for every SKU, including test drops that would never justify a live shoot.

When live on-model still wins

Editorial campaigns, real personalities, unique poses, movement, and community-recognized faces still call for a human shoot. AI on-model is the right tool for catalog and lookbook photography, not the flagship campaign.

FAQ

How much does AI on-model photography cost?

Looknish credits currently run at about $0.50–$2 per HD on-model image depending on plan. See pricing for the current tiers.

Do AI on-model images convert as well as real ones?

For catalog and listing use cases, yes, the buyer needs to see fit and styling on a body, and AI provides that. For hero campaigns, real photography still carries the emotional weight.
